Barcelona Bound - The perfect European Get-away

Barcelona is a vibrant city with a rich history, known for its beaches, architecture, and amazing food

I spent 4 days with all of the above at my fingertips. As soon as we arrived, we grabbed a 5-day metro pass for €40 - essential for a cost-effective trip. This pass allowed us to zip across the city whenever we wanted. This is a brief guide to our adventure, with recommendations covering everything from food to nightlife.

We started our trip with a stroll down La Rambla, a bustling boulevard full of shops, cafes, and street performers. Despite some negative reviews, I found it the perfect first stop to feel the energy of Barcelona. St Josep Market (La Boqueria) was a highlight, filled with fresh fruit, meats, and sweets.

Getting lost in the Old Town streets was a personal favourite. The authentic Gothic architecture creates a unique vibe. The locals were so friendly, as someone who studies Spanish at University, it was great to learn some Catalan!

La Sagrada Familia is genuinely breathtaking—I still can’t decide which I preferred: the glowing interior or the exterior with statues that clearly inspired some Star Wars characters. Gaudí’s masterpiece evokes a sense of God’s presence as light streams through the stained glass windows.

For drinks, I recommend the Surcotel rooftop bar (book a few weeks in advance) for its incredible views of the basilica.

Park Güell is another Gaudí wonder. Its mosaics, winding paths, and colourful tile work create a dreamlike setting, with panoramic city views that make the uphill walk worth it.

No trip is complete without visiting Camp Nou. Even non-football fans will enjoy the history of this legendary stadium.

Food Recommendations:

  • El Pibe on La Calle de Argentina for fantastic burgers

  • Arteteca Pizzeria for crispy pizza in an Italian atmosphere

  • L’entrecote for a mouthwatering steak

If you want to dive into Barcelona’s nightlife, start at the Old Irish bar on La Rambla. For those who love to party, Pacha and Opium offer music and energy that keep you dancing till late.
